Adventure is what we wanted and adventure is what we got! The first 'Official Trip' started at Wannerroo where we met at 9am. It was a good start as no one was late although Julia and I were right on the dot at 9am and when we arrived everyone else was already there.
After filling up with petrol we all headed off in convey to Lancelin making sure that radios were working on the way. David's new radio was a bit tricky to get working for a start as he had subchannels working and no one could hear him until we figured out how to delete the subchannel setting. All the radios worked well in the convey even down to the 1/2 watt models.
We were going past Yanchep fairly soon and seeing how far the recent fires had travelled was quite impressive. We arrived in Lancelin and stopped for coffee and talked about where we should go. First we thought it would be fun to visit the dunes and drive up and down around there but the drop offs were straight down so we went for the beach route. It was fun from the start there with a very soft entrance onto the beach. We all cleared that with lots of momentum and gritted teeth. Then the real fun started. Mike got stuck and we spent the next 15 minutes shovelling from under the car and finding whatever we could to put under the wheels. We managed to get him out but it didn't last for long. Another 20 meters along and it was the same story. More shovelling ensued.
A friendly Patrol came along but would you believe it he was getting stuck as well so wasn't going to be towing anyone. There was some suggestions we should try and snatch the Patrol out with one of our soft roaders but luckily he was able to get out by letting some pressure off his tyres. It would have been a historic moment for 'soft roaders' but the Patrol must have sensed what might happen and somehow got out of the mess it was in.
Marie jumped behind the wheel and showed us all how to drive on the beach and got the X-Trail out with ease (after some more shovelling and letting the tyres down to about 10psi as well!). We found a track off the beach and went back to Lancilin for a picnic.
Things we learned -
Try and find about what the tides are doing before you hit the beach! How to use a shovel (Oh they are useful). Radios are a must have! Always have a sense of humour...it helps when getting unstuck.
Everyone who came along had a great day and seemed to be looking forward to the next challenge.
